Switzerland · Solothurn

Solothurn: a beautiful Swiss old town about one hour from Zurich

Solothurn is not a rushed checklist stop. It is a compact and genuinely attractive Swiss city for a calm half day, with St. Ursus Cathedral, Basel Gate, old town lanes, fountains and the Aare close together.

Why go

Small, but complete: cathedral, Basel Gate, fountains and the Aare

Personal impression

I underestimated Solothurn for a long time. On my first visit, the architecture genuinely caught me off guard: St. Ursus Cathedral, the narrow lanes, the fountains, quiet squares and small cafés. It was not a place to tick off quickly. I honestly did not want to leave.

Genuinely attractive

Solothurn is often presented as one of Switzerland's most beautiful baroque towns. That is not just empty marketing: the old town is compact, bright, walkable and stronger than many places of similar size.

Good for half a day

The station, old town, St. Ursus Cathedral, Basel Gate and the Aare are close together. It works well as a calm stop between Zurich, Bern and Basel.

Easy from Zurich

The train from Zurich HB to Solothurn usually takes about 55 to 65 minutes. Check SBB on the travel day for the exact connection, price and platform.

In town

What to see first

St. Ursus Cathedral

St. Ursus Cathedral is the clearest landmark. The steps, bright facade, columns and roof figures make it the best visual start for the page and for a walk through town.

Basel Gate

Basel Gate marks the eastern side of the old town. The gate, towers, flags and narrow streets make the area easy to understand and good to photograph.

St. Mauritius Fountain

The colourful fountain with the armoured Saint Mauritius is one of those small old town details that make Solothurn worth walking slowly.

Aare and lanes

Solothurn should not be rushed. See the cathedral and gate, then walk through the lanes and end near the Aare.

Planning

Easy from Zurich, but do not overpack it

Half day route

From the station, walk into the old town, see St. Ursus Cathedral, continue to Basel Gate, fountains, lanes and the Aare. That is enough for a first visit.

Good combination

Solothurn fits well between Zurich, Bern and Basel. It adds a very attractive old town with little planning effort.

Plain assessment

It is not mandatory for every Switzerland trip. But for travellers who like old towns, Solothurn is a strong half day stop.
