Personal impression
I underestimated Solothurn for a long time. On my first visit, the architecture genuinely caught me off guard: St. Ursus Cathedral, the narrow lanes, the fountains, quiet squares and small cafés. It was not a place to tick off quickly. I honestly did not want to leave.
Genuinely attractive
Solothurn is often presented as one of Switzerland's most beautiful baroque towns. That is not just empty marketing: the old town is compact, bright, walkable and stronger than many places of similar size.
Good for half a day
The station, old town, St. Ursus Cathedral, Basel Gate and the Aare are close together. It works well as a calm stop between Zurich, Bern and Basel.
Easy from Zurich
The train from Zurich HB to Solothurn usually takes about 55 to 65 minutes. Check SBB on the travel day for the exact connection, price and platform.
